First-place design from Italy will be ‘printed live’ at an event in Chicago in September.
Printing in 3-D is revolutionizing design and manufacturing, and the day when you can download and print your own vehicle isn’t that far away. That is, if you have the motivation and skills to build your own car based on a 3-D printed design.
To show what’s possible in the development of DIY-designed cars using the new technology, crowd-sourced custom automotive manufacturer Local Motors recently unveiled the winning entries in its inaugural 3D Printed Car Design Challenge. The worldwide competition encourages entrants to design a car that can be manufactured using 3-D printing.
First-place winner Michele AnoƩ of Italy earned $5,000 in prize money as well as the chance to see his design become a physical vehicle as soon as September.
